Visibility that converts: PR, credibility, and growth in the age of AI

Victoria Usher, Founder of GingerMay PR

What does PR actually do in 2026, and when is it the right move for growth? Claire speaks with Victoria Usher, founder of award-winning PR agency GingerMay, about visibility, credibility, and why timing matters more than tactics in the age of AI.

Three things to take away

  • Know who you are and who you serve before you spend a penny on PR.

  • PR is more than press. Awards, events, podcasts and AI search all count.

  • If you are thinking of hiring, sort out HR from day one.

Inside the episode

The reluctant business owner

In 2010, Victoria Usher was told to come back to work three weeks after having her second baby, or lose her job. So she left and started out on her own.

What began as consultancy kept winning clients. Soon there was too much work for one person, and GingerMay was born. Today it is an award-winning B2B PR agency in Kent and London.

What PR actually is

PR is more than getting in the newspaper. It covers journalists, awards, events, podcasts, social media and now SEO and GEO.

The goal is simple. Make sure the right people, and the AI tools they ask, know who you are and trust what you say.

When PR is the wrong move

PR can't fix a business that doesn't know who it is or who it serves. Without that, it becomes a sticking plaster.

Get clear on your position first. Then PR has something real to shout about.

Growing a team you can trust

As GingerMay grew, Victoria learnt to step back. When your team knows the answers, you need to stop talking and let them lead, even if they make mistakes.

Give them a safety net, catch problems before clients see them and build a tolerance for mistakes. That is how you grow people you can trust. And if you are hiring, sort out HR from day one.

The mixology moment

At the end of every episode, our guests choose one word to put into the cocktail shaker for success and one word to put on ice. Here is what Victoria Usher had to say...

Into the cocktail shaker for success

Focus

It is easy to become scattergun. Victoria suggests writing down your personal, professional and financial focuses for one, three and five years.

Put on ice

Micromanaging

When your team knows the answers, you need to zip it and let them lead. Otherwise they never learn and everything comes back to you.

Victoria Usher

“You realise that you're the product.”
