Inside the episode
Top seller, unhappy seller
James Newell never missed a sales target in 12 years at Mercedes-Benz. He did around £600 million of business, and he didn't enjoy a minute of it.
When his first child arrived, he knew he had to change. A chat at a networking event gave him the idea: work out what you do well, then teach it.
Sales is just a conversation
Sales isn't sleazy. It is a conversation with money at the end. That's all.
James started teaching six people for free, and it snowballed. Today he runs Clear Sales Message and hosts The Daily Sales Message podcast.
Why you can't explain what you do
Most business owners struggle to say what they do. James calls it the false consensus effect. We describe our work from our own side and assume everyone else sees it the same.
Practise the simple questions. What do you do? Why you? Why that price? If you can answer without notes, people trust that you know your stuff.
Care first, sell second
Only ever saying 'do you want to buy?' makes it hard to build a relationship. Be interesting, be useful and put their best interest first.
Sometimes the right answer is 'don't buy from me'. That honesty builds more trust than pressure ever will.
